Byetta
Byetta linked with Pancreatitis, Kidney Failure & DeathByetta (exenatide), a drug approved as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, has been linked to acute pancreatitis, a life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas, and kidney failure. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain that is sometimes accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Byetta is manufactured by San Diego-based Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc.
In October, 2007, the FDA had received reports of hemmorrhagic or necrotizing pancreatitis in patients taking Byetta. The FDA warned healthcare professionals that patients taking Byetta to seek prompt medical attention if they experienced unexplained persistent severe adominal pain which may or may not be accompanied by vomiting.
In November, 2009, the FDA reported that from April 2005 through October 2008, it had received 78 cases of altered kidney function (62 cases of acute renal failure and 16 cases of renal insufficiency) in patients using Byetta.
